THE FIREHOUSE SESSIONS

29 DISTINCTIVE APARTMENTS IN SOUTH KENSINGTON

ABOUT THE SESSIONS

The Firehouse project is a unique opportunity for the development team to combine its real estate development knowledge with the relationships fostered through community work. By leveraging these experiences, the project is positioned to be responsible, environmentally sustainable and inclusive. JDT International | E-Built, in partnership with their development team, will engage with students, professionals & community members to provide unique educational opportunities and engagement experiences associated with the preservation and re-development of the Historic Firehouse project located at 1221 North 4th Street.

Our impact goals are to provide exposure and project engagement to individuals currently underrepresented in the field of design, construction, and real estate development; and to provide meaningful engagement and development within neighborhoods to ensure a sustainable community, post-development. We have allocated resources towards creating and managing a robust series of multi-generational workshops and industry exposure opportunities during construction and post-development of this project. Every professional involved within the project will donate time to mentoring or providing network expansion opportunities over the life cycle of the project.

02 HISTORIC FACADE RESTORATION WORKSHOP – MAY 2023

SESSION 02 | SATURDAY MAY 6, 2023

Historic Engine Company 29 retains its integrity, as both the overall form and defining architectural features remain intact since the time of construction. There are many façade details worthy of the most delicate and detailed restorative efforts.

During this session, we learned the basics of mold making and casting replicas for historic facades. Hands-on demonstrations and practice exercises included design considerations and applications for new ornamental stonework, creating negative-form molds, mixing and pouring plaster into a mold to form enrichments, and ensuring the cast surface is free of air pockets and blemishes.

01 HISTORIC PRESERVATION & FACADE RESTORATION – NOVEMBER 2022

SESSION 01 | THURSDAY NOVEMBER 17, 2022

Historic Engine Company No. 29 was constructed in 1895 and is an intact and rare example of Richardson Romanesque architecture in Philadelphia. Not only was the building built during a period of significant architectural achievement in fire house design, but also during a period of significant growth and formalization of the Philadelphia City fire department.

During this session, we learned about the history of Engine Company No. 29, the differences between a conservation, preservation, rehabilitation, or restoration of a historic building, the skilled processes used to restore and preserve the building, energy conservation techniques and creative adaptive re-use strategies.
